Dental care for low-income families and children
Tooth decay is the most prevalent form of dental problems in children and teenagers. This risk is even greater among children of low-income families. Single parents finding it hard to make ends meet, face the hardship of not being able to provide basic dental care for their children. There are programs in place that offer help for dental procedures and treatment. Research in the available government programs if qualified and contacting your dentist will help people utilize these dental benefits for their children. By having access to preventative dental care in the form of government assistance or state assistance plans, children are assured the quality dental care needed to promote healthy teeth. A healthy smile generates higher self-esteem and confidence.
The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) has made it possible for low-income single parents and families with children to obtain preventative dental care and treatments for their children. Not all families are able to afford dental insurance. Many states are now offering the advantage of the SCHIP program as a safety net for families either uninsured or unable financially to receive dental care. As a parent, not being able to afford the dental care and preventative treatments for their children is stressful and heartbreaking. Families can contact their local county offices of health and human services for information on Medicaid and the SCHIP program.
Most procedures and treatments covered are ones considered routine and preventative. Treatments covered are limited but usually cover cleanings, fillings, fluoride treatments, x-rays, minor restorations and may include extractions. Dental practices that honor the state programs may be limited, but with the knowledge of the long-range advantages of good, quality dental care, more dentists and families are becoming involved.
