Dental Insurance Plans

Today individuals and families have many more options available to them to prepare and succeed in continued preventative dental health. Having good dental health provides high self-esteem and encourages overall general good health. By particicipating in a dental insurance plan, one can afford the dental care necessary in promoting families to continue care for their lifetime. By promoting lifelong habits of routine dental care, people are able to set examples then to their own children of the benefits of caring for one’s teeth routinely for life. Dental insurance plans are widely available and finding a plan that suits a person and or their family is possible with careful research. By reading sites on the internet and contacting the Better Business Bureau, you will become aware of the differences in dental insurance and better be able to make decisions on what is covered and the treatments available.

While most health issues are unpredictable, major dental care is preventable with routine visits and treatments. With the help of dental insurance, a family is able to cut the costs of most emergency dental care and major restoration treatments because they are then able to obtain the necessary care they need for their dental health on a scheduled basis, often times preventing future major dental issues.

When choosing a dental plan, look for what treatments are covered, such as yearly prophylaxis (cleaning and or polishing), routine x-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants for children. Find out if you are able to choose your own dentist and if this plan allows for the referral to specialist if needed. There should be listed what emergency treatments are covered and what orthodontic (braces) treatments are included. Most plans have deductibles and have co-pays, all more within reason than trying to pay for dental care without the help and benefits of having a good dental insurance plan.

Most employers now have dental insurance included in their health insurance benefits, but if your employer does not offer dental insurance, you do have other options. You may consider an individual dental insurance plan (traditional, indemnity) to assure the routine care necessary for you and your family. These plans require a premium and have deductibles, covering most of the treatments and allowing you to choose your dentist. These plans generally require pre-certification for procedures. After you have met your deductible, most indemnity plans cover 80% of treatments that are considered as customary care, while you pay the remaining 20%. These plans usually have a maximum yearly amount and once this is met, generally cover then 100% of what is allowed for customary care. Another option available is a managed dental insurance (preferred provider organization), like most managed health plans, this plan has a reduced premium, offering discounts through the dentists listed. With this plan, you may use a dentist out of the PPO network, but will have to pay the remainder of the costs after the discounted service covered.

Whether you are covered through your employer or choose an individual plan, dental insurance is a very important step in maintaining your health. Because so many dental procedures are preventative, getting a good plan in place now is to your advantage, for your general health and financially. Being prepared and being involved in a scheduled treatment process with your dentist will ensure a lifetime of good dental health. Having a reputable dental insurance plan will not only guarantee continued treatment available, but will be in place if the need for emergency treatment arises. Children of families who place dental care as a priority then have the example to continue dental care in their adult lives.
